Ron Perlman tried this, but Guillermo del Toro found his reading to be completely unusable
Narrative
A mysterious device designed to grant its owner eternal life resurfaces after four hundred years, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. In an interview included in the Criterion version of this film, Ron Perlman talks about how Angel was supposed to speak fluent Spanish. So the character was changed to an American expat who hates being in Mexico so much that what little Spanish he does speak is deliberately spoken badly. When Jesús searches for Aurora after she has taken over Cronos, as he walks through two doors, he stops. .

Die Schöne Müller by Franz Schubert Arranged by Charlotte Georg (as Lee Ashley) BMIE Editor: Software Music BMI Cortesia de Capitol Productions Music – Ole Georg. In 1536 in Veracruz, Mexico, during the Inquisition, an alchemist builds a mysterious and sophisticated device called Cronos to grant its owner eternal life. In the present day, antique dealer Jesus Gris (Federico Luppi) discovers Cronos hidden inside an ancient statue while cleaning it with his granddaughter Aurora (Tamara Shanath). He accidentally triggers the device and soon his wife Mercedes (Margarita Isabel) and he discovers that he has a younger appearance. A clearly alien named Angel de la Guardia (Ron Perlman) visits Gris’s shop and buys an old statue.
The main character becomes a vampire after accidentally triggering an ancient device
He visits Angel, who introduces him to eccentric millionaire De la Guardia (Claudio Brook), who explains the healing power of Cronos and eternal life. De la Guardia sends Angel to hunt down Gris to get Cronos no matter the cost. "Cronos" is a horror film by Guillermo del Toro with a creepy, violent, strange and bizarre story. A dying man’s obsession with Cronos leaves a trail of violence that attempts to find the owner of the device. High expectations for Guillermo del Toro and Criterion’s film are a bit disappointing despite the originality, performances and cinematography.
